symptoms not to be ignored

Pregnancy symptoms differ from one expectant mother to another as it is a unique experience. Most pregnancy symptoms like Braxton Hicks contractions, light spotting, constipation, headache etc., are normal and not to worry about but there are some symptoms of pregnancy which require immediate attention and medical care, such as:

  1. Chills & Fever

If you have fever and chills with pain during pregnancy then it must be checked by your medical practitioner as it could be a serious infection. Do not opt for over the counter medications as they are not safe and may not cure the fever.

  1. Vaginal bleeding

Vaginal bleeding in the first trimester is a serious concern as it may be a sign of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or under development of the foetus.  However, bleeding is different from early spotting observed within the first month of pregnancy. Spotting occurs when the embryo implants itself to the uterus wall or due to vaginal tear during intercourse. If the spotting is heavy with pain, it needs to be checked immediately as it is not a good pregnancy symptom.

  1. Vaginal discharge with pain

Increase in vaginal discharge is one of the common symptoms of pregnancy but if you feel pain or pressure along with blood then you must visit your doctor. During second trimester, some women might have vaginal discharge with blood and pain which could be a sign of miscarriage.

  1. Less or no baby movement

You need to check the baby’s movements everyday and observe the changes week by week. If you feel that the movements are stopped or slowed down, call your doctor immediately for an appointment. Baby movements get stronger after week 24 so you can track them only from 7th month. You can drink orange juice or water if the movements slow down, till you reach the doctor’s clinic.

  1. Severe cramp

You have to check if there are symptoms like your baby is pushing down, severe abdominal pain, menstrual like cramping or more than four contractions in an hour before week 36. However, if you experience light cramps which are not painful, then it is a normal pregnancy symptom.  Change positions while resting to relieve from the discomfort.

  1. Burning or pain during urination

If you have painful or burning urination along with fever and back ache then it could be a sign of urinary infection. So, if you have this kind of pregnancy symptoms, it is crucial to get medical help as soon as possible.

  1. Frequent dizziness

Consult a doctor if you experience frequent dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, heart palpitation, breathing difficulty or chest pain. Any pregnancy symptom involving pain needs to be checked right from the first trimester to ensure good health.
