Summer is a harbinger of not just mangoes and sweat but also brings with it a host of diseases. Here’s a list of diseases who may come across in summer, especially when you have kids at home and the ways you can prevent and tackle them with ease.
Typhoid fever: It is a disease passed on by contaminated food and water by the bacteria Salmonella typhi. During summer the bacteria proliferates unhygienically through consumption of stored water and food.
Diarrhoea & Dysentery: Watery stools can be caused by various bacteria and virus spread through contaminated food and water that grows rapidly during summer. It can cause severe dehydration, stomach ache and exhaustion which can pull down the kid very badly.
Chicken Pox & Measles: Humid and hot weather is as an ideal breeding ground for various skin infections and eruptions. These infections are mostly caused by viruses, the symptoms that come along with these infections are fever, sore throat and itching.
Heat borne diseases
Heat stroke: High temperature and hot dry wind can lead to heat stroke. The body’s temperature regulating mechanism when exposed to extremely hot weather fails. This can cause exhaustion, dehydration, high fever and even coma that can lead to heat stroke.
Dehydration: This is a typical illness that occurs in summer.The amount of water consumed and water expelled goes on a huge mismatch due to exposure to heat, sweat, less water consumption, vomiting or diarrhoea etc,.This can lead to severe fatigue, lightheadedness, excessive thirst, dryness of mouth and tongue, dry cough and flushing of the skin.
Prickly heat: This is a heat-induced skin rash, seen commonly in children because their sweat glands are still in the developing phase. The reason for these rashes is, the sweat becomes trapped under the skin.It is very uncomfortable and itchy but not a sign to see the doctor.
How to prevent these conditions?
Increase the intake of water and fluids during summer to ledge the outburst of most of the above-said conditions
Soothe your gut health with healthy nutritious choices during summer by indulging in buttermilk, curd, coconut water, melons, fruits, cucumber, onions, lemons and mint.
Do not consume stored food and foods served in open places and roadside shops.
Prevent stepping out between 11-4 pm during summer
Smear loads of sunscreen before stepping out directly in the sun
