Pregnant women are usually aware of the healthy nutrients required for normal development of the babies, but it is also important to know about the fruits that should be avoided during pregnancy.  Although fruits are good to consume, it is important to know the effects of various fruits during pregnancy.

Some of the fruits which are not suitable for mothers-to-be are listed below:

Papaya is known for its rich iron and vitamin source but it is good to be avoided when your baby is inside the womb. The unripe and semi ripe papaya varieties are rich in latex which tends to trigger uterine contractions, leading to early labour. Thus, it is best avoided during the third trimester to have a normal delivery without any complications.
As papaya is known to cure heartburn, anaemia and constipation, it can be ingested during second trimester under the consultation of your gynecologist.

Although grapes are a multifunctional nutritious fruit, it is best to avoid it in the third trimester. Grape fruit has heat content which may affect the mother and the baby especially in the final trimester. Even the intake of raisins should be limited during the third trimester. You can talk to your gynecologist to get a better picture.

Pineapple is another fruit to be kept away from pregnant women. Pineapple contains rich amount of ‘Bromelain’ that causes the softening of the cervix which may induce an early labour in pregnant women. It is also said that excessive quantity of pineapple can cause diarrhea, resulting in dehydration. For the above reasons, it is better to avoid this fruit.
As the plant kingdom grows wide with thousands of varieties, there are a ton of fruits that can be consumed by pregnant women which will cause good effects to the body:

  • Strawberries
  • Guava
  • Mango
  • Kiwi
  • Watermelon
  • Pear
  • Cherries etc.
