7 Reasons to Drink Water during Pregnancy

Pregnant or not, drinking water is essential for the normal functioning of the body. Having sufficient amount of water during pregnancy will avoid a wide range of discomforts apart from dehydration. It is crucial for pregnant women to consume around 3 liters (10-12 glasses) of fluid every day which can be water, fruit juices, milk and tea. The below reasons will let you know the importance of having water while you’re pregnant:

Dehydration during pregnancy causes nausea, cramps, edema, dizziness, constipation etc. You can detect dehydration by checking the colour of urine. It should be pale or straw coloured, if the urine is dark, you’re dehydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration.

Urinary Tract Infection:

Pregnant women are generally prone to urinary tract infection which may cause adverse effects on them. Drinking high volume of water will keep the urine diluted and thereby reduces the risk of the infection.

Swelling on the hands, legs, ankles and feet are common during pregnancy and can be minimized by drinking water. Having plenty of water flushes out sodium from the body and minimizes edema.

Amniotic fluid Levels

The growing baby needs a pool of amniotic fluid to snuggle inside the uterus. According to some studies, drinking sufficient water will maintain the right amniotic fluid levels in the womb.

Due to hormonal changes and sluggish bowel movements, many pregnant women suffer from constipation, which gets worse with iron supplements. Drink plenty of water every day to avoid constipation.

Over Heating:

During pregnancy, the core body temperature increases for expectant mothers even in normal climate which leads to overheating of the body. Drinking water will keep the body cool and helps to avoid the adverse effects of overheating.

Weight loss:

Pregnant women tend to eat more and suffer from weight gain which is not advisable. Drinking more water is the best way to diet as it controls over eating and thereby helps in reducing body weight.
