No. 1 Mistake of a new parent: Panicking over everything
The simplest things that can happen to a baby such as vomiting, crying, spitting up etc can freak a new parent. This may cause the baby to turn anxious too. Constant worry can ruin the entire 1st year of parenthood with your child into a nightmare for a panicky new parent. So the tip is to relax and go with the flow and enjoy the journey with your baby.
No.2 Mistake, stopping your infant from crying out
Babies are designed to cry and that is how babies communicate. It does not mean that you need to console and cuddle to stop your baby from crying every time. If your baby is running a fever or a rash or showing any other sign of discomfort then crying is a caution and you can catch those clues and connect with the doctor immediately.
No.3 Mistake, Waking your baby up to breastfeed
A baby who is sumptuously fed sleep peacefully, there is no necessity for you to wake your baby in between a deep sleep and breastfeed the child, thinking the feed wasn’t sufficient. Unless it was real long since the baby hasn’t cried over for a feed.
No.4 Mistake, Confusing spit- up & vomit
Spit up is usually related to feeding and happens after a feed, whereas vomiting happens due to gastrointestinal tract virus. Vomiting might occur every 30-45 minutes regardless of feeding. So being able to differentiate both can save you from a lot of trouble.
No.5 Mistake, Self-Medicating, an infant for fever
Fever over 100.4 F in a newborn is always an emergency, except if the fever occurs after a jab of immunization. At this early age, the immune system is not fully developed and the infant cannot handle an infection on its own. So do not give any self-medication to the child, get pediatricians advice immediately.
No.6 Mistake, Not using a car seat
As soon as you have your baby home you should get your car seat installed well by the neighborhood baby store. The baby feels a lot comfortable and enjoying the ride by training him/her to sit in the seat specially designed for babies.
No.7 Mistake neglecting oral care.
Oral Hygiene is a crucial bit which most parents ignore, few tips to help you in caring for your baby’s oral hygiene.
- Once teeth have erupted do not feed the child with milk in the bed as it causes cavities
- Use a wet gauze and wipe the baby’s gums
- Use a toothbrush as the baby turns one
- Check whether the water you consume contains fluoride or buy a fluoride supplement from your dentist
No.8 Mistake ignoring your marriage
The child gets all the attention in a new parent’s life and everything else including their marriage takes a backseat. It is good to focus on your baby but make sure you do it with a sense of being a couple, caring for each other equally. When a couple begin to zone out their marriage and parenting it may result in a marital discord.
No.9 Mistake Fighting in front of the baby
This can leave a permanent sense of psychological despair in the minds of a child making them feel insecure and less capable of facing the world. So be cautious of every word spoken in front of your child. Children learn most habits and verbal dialect from home.
No.10 Mistake, Trusting unreliable sources of parenting advice
Most parents of the current time rely on search engines for all their queries or discuss among the peers for parental guidance. When you want to replicate any of such ideas on your child, make sure you get your guidance from more authentic sources such as doctors or validated books that are acknowledged by renowned pediatric bodies.
